Yes, I failed my first semester of nursing school

I didn't fail every class but just one class and didn't even really fail but we know how nursing school is ...

My first semester of nursing school was LIFE CHANGING.

I cried A LOT, I lost friends, and I was always stressed. But my BIGGEST mistake was not learning how to study CORRECTLY.

I skated by in the majority of my prerequisites with A's. I studied the day before and passed tests with flying colors. I just KNEW it would be the same in nursing school. Yep, I was wrong (AF)! I tried to cram for every test and just couldn't understand how I wasn't making any A's. I was actually making STRAIGHT C's.

The class that put the final nail in the coffin was fundamentals. :(

Due to my cramming tendencies, I never took the time to grasp the content, and I just crammed and forgot the material after each test. So, when it came time for the CUMULATIVE final, I was screwed. It was SO much information that I needed to cover that I didn't have the time to cover it all. I couldn't even fathom how in the world I was to cram hundreds of PowerPoint slides the night before the exam... but I tried anyway. I stayed up til 3 AM studying for the final exam, only to make a 65. After that, my overall test average dropped to 74.5. Even though, my grades from my quizzes, assignments, and clinical equated to a low B, I had to retake the class.

Even though this failure HURT and put me behind a semester, it gave me a chance to build better study habits. Also, to develop a better foundation of fundamental nursing knowledge that helped me excel throughout the rest of the program.

So, future nurses, remember it's okay to fail because this is how we learn, but always pick yourself back up and keep going!
